Michigan has specific certification requirements for documents submitted for apostille or authentication. Vital records must be certified copies, and Michigan notaries cannot certify copies of records or documents as true copies. Depending on the document, the appropriate certification may need to come from the issuing authority, document holder, or another authorized official before apostille processing.
MICHIGAN APOSTILLE REQUIREMENTS
Michigan apostilles are issued by the Michigan Department of State, Office of the Great Seal for eligible Michigan documents. Documents generally must contain the signature of an authorized Michigan official or commissioned Michigan notary before they can be authenticated.
As part of the quotation process, Porchlight Group Apostille reviews each document against the applicable Michigan apostille and authentication requirements to confirm the appropriate processing steps before your order begins.
Vital records: Michigan birth, marriage, divorce, and death records must be certified copies from an eligible Michigan authority. The Office of the Great Seal does not authenticate an uncertified original vital record.
Notarized documents: Michigan notarized documents must contain the required notarial information, including the notary's name, signature, notarization date, commission expiration date, county of commission, and county of execution when different. Original signatures are required. Stamped, photocopied, or facsimile notary signatures are not accepted.
Certified copies: Michigan notaries cannot certify a document as a true copy of an original. When certification is required, the appropriate certification must come from an authorized source or be prepared according to Michigan's requirements for that document type.
Foreign-language documents: Documents written in a foreign language must include a written English translation when submitted for Michigan authentication.
Federal documents: FBI background checks and other eligible federal documents follow the federal authentication process rather than the Michigan state apostille process.
